Harlan Hobart Grooms

Senior Judge, Northern District of Alabama, 1953-d. 1991

Harlan Hobart Grooms served as judge for the Northern District of Alabama from 1953 to 1991. Grooms was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky on November 7, 1900. He received his law degree from University of Kentucky College of Law in 1926. Grooms moved to Birmingham, Alabama and practiced law at a private firm from 1926 to 1953. He was also a member of the US Army Reserve from 1926 to 1939. On July 23, 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated Grooms to as a judge for the Northern District Court, to a seat vacated by Judge Clarence Mullins. The Senate confirmed his nomination on July 31, 1953. Grooms assumed senior status on February 3, 1969 and continued to serve in that capacity until his death on August 23, 1991.
