Martha Craig Daughtrey
Senior Judge, Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, 1993-
Martha Craig Daughtrey is a judge for the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Daughtrey was born on July 21, 1942 in Covington, Kentucky. She received a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University in 1964 and a law degree from Vanderbilt's law school in 1968. After law school, Daughtrey worked at a private practice in Nashville, Tennessee for a year and then, in 1968, she became an assistant US attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. From 1969 to 1972, she worked as assistant district attorney for the Tenth Judicial Circuit in Tennessee. Daughtrey then returned to Vanderbilt Law School to teach from 1972 to 1990. During these years, she also served as an associate judge for the Tennessee Court of Appeal Middle Division (1975-1990). In 1990, she became associate justice for the Tennessee Supreme Court. Three years later, President Bill Clinton nominated Daughtrey to serve as a judge for the Sixth Circuit, to a seat newly authorized by 104 Stat. 5089. The Senate confirmed her nomination on November 20, 1993. In 2009, Daughtrey assumed senior status and continues to serve in that capacity.
